The core technology of this company is Photonics and there are 4 areas of expertise: Optical design, Thermal measurement of thin films and nanostructures, Diffuse Optical Wireless Communication, and Biophotonics (Photothermal imaging and response). Besides, the company conduct R&D with local and overseas universities for scientific investigation, technology and product developments.

Prior to founding BC Photonics Tech, Dr. Chen was a professor in the Nanyang Technological University (NTU, ranking in Electrical Engineering) of Singapore from 2001-2010, leading a team of 12 research staffs and students with funding exceeding $1 million USD. He also served as deputy supervisor of Photonics lab, and participated in Industrial Interaction Committee and MSc Curriculum Committee.
Before joining NTU, Dr. Chen was the optical designer in Avimo Electro-Optics (nowadays part of Qioptiq), Singapore, an OEM company in Optics, from 1991-1996. He designed various kinds of optical systems that have been successfully launched into the market, supporting the company to diversify its business from solely military to other applications including office, entertainment and medical.
Dr. Chen’s areas of technical expertise include: optical design, thermal measurement of thin films and nanostructures, diffuse optical wireless communication, and biophotonics (photothermal imaging and response). Recognising photonics is a key technology in the 21st century, he promoted photonics and served as faculty advisor of NTU SPIE student chapter and supervised secondary and junior college students’ photonics projects. He also was consultant to Optics companies in Singapore and provided training to the professionals.
Dr. Chen received his B.S. and M.S. in Physics from University of California, Los Angeles in 1982, 1984 respectively. He also holds a M.S. in Electrical Engineering (OPTICS) from University of Southern California and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Nanyang Technological University. He is a senior member of IEEE and a reviewer of multiple Photonics related journals.
